Keeping our roads clean is a challenge that requires ongoing effort and community involvement. In May, the Sussex Lions Club joined forces with members of Scouting America Troop 39G to tackle this task through the Adopt-a-Highway program. Their combined dedication and teamwork made a noticeable difference in the local environment, resulting in a cleaner stretch of state Highway 164.

The Importance of Community Clean-Up Efforts
Litter along highways and roads not only spoils the natural beauty of an area but also poses environmental hazards. Trash can harm wildlife, pollute waterways, and create unsafe conditions for drivers and pedestrians. Programs like Adopt-a-Highway empower local organizations to take responsibility for specific stretches of road, ensuring regular maintenance and cleanup.
The heavy spring storms in the area made road cleanup more needed than ever. The Sussex Lions Club is proud to support keeping our local roads clean!
Benefits Beyond a Cleaner Highway
The cleanup event offered more than just a tidier road. It provided an opportunity for community members to connect and work toward a shared goal. Scouts learned valuable lessons about teamwork, environmental stewardship, and the impact of their actions.
For the Sussex Lions Club, the event reinforced their commitment to service and strengthened their relationship with local youth organizations. The collaboration also raised awareness about the Adopt-a-Highway program, encouraging other groups to participate.

Continuing the Commitment
The Sussex Lions Club maintains their Adopt-a-Highway responsibilities with cleanups throughout the year. Community members interested in joining future cleanups can contact the Sussex Lions Club at https://www.sussexlions.org/.
